Trekking & Meditation
Jumla sits in one of Nepal's most beautiful and least-visited corners. On your days off, you're welcome to explore the trails and quiet spots around Patarasi and Jumla Bazaar, from short hilltop walks to the multi-day trek out to Rara Lake.
Short Walks & Quiet Spots
Good for a free morning or afternoon during your stay. No permits or guides needed for these.
Chandannath Temple
Half dayA Shiva temple on the hill above Jumla Bazaar. The climb is short and the views over the valley are worth the sweat. A quiet place to sit for a while before heading back down.
Jumla to Patmara
10 km, 4-5 hoursA village trail through farmland and forest just outside Jumla Bazaar. Good for a half-day walk if you want to see how the surrounding villages live and farm.
Gothichaur
16 km, 5 hoursAn open highland pasture used for grazing in the summer months. Flat, wide, and very quiet, it's a good spot to just sit and breathe for a while.
Multi-Day Treks
For volunteers staying longer, or coming back for a second trip. These need proper planning, so talk to us in advance if you want to fit one in.
Rara Lake
5-7 days round tripNepal's largest lake, set inside Rara National Park at almost 3,000 meters. The trail crosses Danfe Lagna and Jaljala Pass before dropping down to the lake. It's the main reason people trek out this way, and it earns the trip.
Sinja Valley
Usually added onto the Rara routeThe valley where the Nepali language is said to have originated, once home to the old Khasa Malla kingdom. Old stone ruins, quiet villages, and a slower pace than the trail to Rara.
Kanjiroba Himal Viewpoint
Extended, several extra daysFor volunteers who want to push further west toward Dolpo. Bigger peaks, fewer people, and a longer commitment. Best planned well ahead of time.
Before You Go
Talk to our volunteer coordinator before planning a trek. Weather changes fast in the hills, some routes need a local guide, and trails can be closed depending on the season. We're happy to help you plan around your teaching schedule.
